A group called ‘Save Bristol Bay‘ is making the rounds in cities on the Northwest coast showing what is undoubtedly a non-objective video to citizen activists and urging them to send letters to Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) (who we wrote about previously) and Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) to encourage the Washington State Senators to ask the Environmental Protection Agency to pre-emptively deny a permit for the proposed Pebble Mine in Alaska.
Currently the mining project is undergoing extensive reviews to see if the proposed mine will have negative impacts on other parts of Alaska. However, these groups want the EPA to completely shut this project down prior to the completion of an environmental assessment. They are obvious against the mine, but might they be worried that the EPA will find that the mine can co-exist with other Alaskan industries?
At one of the recent
meetings a fan of Resourceful Earth noticed that the it appears that the letters were being signed in exchange for entries into a raffle containing numerous prizes, the top prize valued at over $1000. If true, this would seem to raise some doubts about the validity of any letters they collected.
